Profile

The GET (Grupo de Engenharia de Telecomputação, http://get.dsi.uminho.pt) research group at the University of Minho investigates new methodologies and platforms for application development in pervasive computing environments. We seek to study the development of non-conventional information systems, i.e. systems that are supported by a multitude of heterogeneous devices and are able to produce contextualised information for assisting mobile users while on their daily life activities, with particular focus on the design of software architectures to support the use of location in mobile applications. We have participated in several funded research projects which are related to this proposal: AROUND – Supporting Location-based Internet Services, VADE project – Value Added Environments for Dynamic Support to Location-Based
Services in UMTS Networks, two nationally funded Portuguese research projects, and the HYPERGEO project – Easy and Friendly Access of Geographic Information for Mobile Users, an European funded R&D project (IST-1999-11641). As a result of our active involvement in these joint research activities, GET has established a significant number of relevant research links with other research groups in several countries, both in academia and in industry, and has gained considerable expertise in the development of mobile location-based applications.

Role in the Project

The GET research team will mainly focus on the research work for WP5 and will lead the Validation work package. Research activities will focus on a generic, open platform to facilitate the deployment, integration, discovery and binding of e-government services (e.g Report, Police, Emergency and Medical services) that are associated with the physical environment (local services) to mobile users, both citizens and public sector employees.
